About Us

At Mahas Dance, the essence of Mahas encapsulates a profound philosophy intertwined with our artistic expression. The term Mahas was derived by the teachings of Matias De Stefano on Gaia. Looking to the stars, Sirius, for a profound narrative of the In Na people, recounts the genesis of existence from a void of unity, sparked into being by the rhythmic breath that initiates the creation of every reality. A journey that begins with a thought, a thinking wave, and a vibration that manifests as a tangible hmmm sound. This cosmic breath unfurls a door within the universe, named MHS - The Portal, the Time, the Space. Mahas was seen as the first name of the divine, of existence and it embodies creation and consciousness, embarking on a journey from unity towards boundless dimensions. The purpose of Mahas transcends the mere act of creation; it is an endeavour to comprehend every space and time, drawing them into the portal, back to the self, named SHM - Saham. The universe, once referred to as the process of Mahas Saham, commences at the self in unity, diverging into myriad dimensions, actively participating in the creation of diverse realities, and culminating in a return to the self. This cyclical journey is not driven by a specific purpose but is a profound odyssey of self-rediscovery of one's potential.

At Mahas Dance, this profound philosophy forms the core of our artistic endeavour where there is no prescribed purpose but a beautiful invitation to know oneself through movement. Embracing this wisdom, the dance floor is a sacred ground for self-exploration, where individuals can transform and shape their own realities. As choreography weaves through the fabric of existence, Mahas Dance invites individuals to embark on a journey of self-discovery, imagination, creativity, unity and the transformative power of dance.

Mahas Dance places a strong emphasis on body alignment, providing a platform for individuals to not only refine their dance technique but also foster their overall body awareness through mindful movement. We focus on promoting improved posture, balance, coordination, strength and flexibility. When we move intentionally, we become more aware of our body. When we invite movement, we release endorphins, relieve stress, boost our confidence, emotional wellbeing, and physical healing.

Individuals are encouraged to tap into their unique creative essence. The dance floor becomes a canvas for self-creation, to convey emotions, thoughts, and stories through movement. This act of self-expression contributes to a sense of liberation, joy and empowerment, fostering a deeper connection with one's authentic self.

Mahas Dance serves as a means to anchor and ground oneself in the present moment. The rhythmic patterns and intentional movements provide a sense of stability, allowing individuals to release pent-up energy and connect to their inner peace. It becomes a therapeutic outlet, aiding in the release of tension and fostering a centered state of being.

Creating a nurturing environment for individuals to connect with others, is another value of Mahas Dance. Through shared movements and collaborative choreography, participants build a sense of community and support. The dance space becomes a place of connection, where individuals can share their journeys, inspire one another, and collectively celebrate the joy of movement.

In essence, Mahas Dance transcends the physical realm of technique and choreography, offering a holistic approach to well-being. It aligns the body, mind and spirit, encouraging self-expression and self-discovery, grounding in the present, the releasing of energy, and fosters meaningful connections.

Her training with Southern Edge Arts encompassed a wide array of styles, including Contemporary, Circus, Trapeze, Ballet, Acro-Yoga, Hip-hop, and Breakdance. Vanessa graced the stage at the Albany Entertainment Centre in a SNAP production and also self-choreographed and lead a captivating dance performance alongside the Albany City Wind Ensemble, with a created school dance team.

Venturing briefly into Ballroom and Pole dancing through other schools, Vanessa relocated to Perth at the age of 18 in 2013. In Perth, she immersed herself in the world of Contemporary dance with STRUT Dance and joined Steps Youth Dance Company. Subsequently, she became a member of The Dance Collective, where she trained and performed for four years until 2018. Vanessa expanded her repertoire to include Jazz Funk, Burlesque, Dancehall, Heels and Lyrical, yet her true passion lies in Contemporary, Hip hop, and Dancehall.

Throughout her journey, Vanessa had the privilege of performing at various venues across the countryside, such as Bunbury forefront stage, Albany Town Hall, Northbridge's Heath Ledger Theatre, Perth Crown Theatre, and in multiple Flash Mobs. Beyond performing, Vanessa obtained her Zumba instructor license, sharing her expertise in health, fitness, and overall well-being by teaching classes in Perth and Exmouth. She loved learning different cultural rhythms and movements including, Salsa, Reggaeton, Merengue, Bachata, Belly-dance, Bhangra, Soca, Samba, Cumbia, Cha-cha, Pachanga, Flamenco, Quebradita, Brazilian Funk and more.

In 2019, Vanessa collaborated with Jess Dudley at Bangarang Dance Studio in Exmouth, where she not only taught but also successfully ran over twelve inspiring dance classes for students aged 3 to 14 years old. The class genres ranged from Jazz and Contemporary to Hip hop and Funky kids dance. The children's end of year performance was choreographed and guided by Vanessa. Vanessa further showcased her choreographic skills by leading a group of young dancers at Bangarang, performing at the Art Quest Exhibition at the Ningaloo Centre Gallery in collaboration with Exmouth artists. Vanessa's journey is a testament to her unwavering passion and commitment to the art of dance.

Adding to her diverse skill set, Vanessa completed her Bachelor’s in Counselling with a minor in Youth Studies and Children and Family Studies at ECU in 2020. Furthermore, she has been a Certified Level III Early Child Care Educator since 2015, contributing her expertise to multiple childcare centres, including Geraldton. Vanessa's multifaceted background reflects her commitment to both the artistic and holistic development of individuals, fostering a sense of community and well-being.

Vanessa's remarkable journey in the world of dance culminated in the establishment of her own dance school, Mahas Dance, in 2021. Here, she passionately imparted her knowledge to kids, teaching them Earthy Contemporary and Urban Hip-hop styles. The school also catered to adults, offering classes in Contemporary, Latin Fusion, and Ecstatic connection and movement. In her role as an educator, Vanessa has curated a nurturing environment within her dance classes where students not only belong to a group but also have the freedom to enjoy themselves and convey emotions through their bodies. The aim is to create a beautiful space that fosters connection, self-expression, and joy.

Vanessa has a profound appreciation for the diverse ways in which people worldwide express themselves through movement and storytelling. She firmly believes in the inherent ability of every individual to connect, feel, and move to the rhythm of music and sound, with each persons unique expression. Recognising the special significance of belonging to a group, Vanessa views it as a transformative space for self-discovery, interpersonal understanding, and exploration of the broader world.

After dedicating a couple of years to her personal development, Vanessa immersed herself in the practices of yoga, meditation, and somatic movement. This period of self-discovery allowed her to deepen her connection with movement and enhance her teaching approach. She had the privilege of being contracted by and to collaborate with DADDA, a not-for-profit, cultural and community based arts organisation, also a nationally registered NDIS Provider and Health Service Provider. Vanessa coordinated and run weekly dance workshops for a project in Mullewa, called Dance Hall, teaching cultural folk group dances to connect and unit the people of the community, resulting in three large Dance Hall evening events.

In 2024, Vanessa is excited to reopen mindful dance and movement classes, extending the benefits of these holistic practices to the community. Through Mahas Dance, Vanessa continues to inspire and uplift others, fostering a space where the joy of dance meets the transformative power of mindful movement.
